The most important research directions of the Heating Systems Engineering team include: comprehensive research and hydraulic analyzes of network systems in various operating conditions, including operational analyzes regarding the cooperation of heating networks with central and distributed heat storage tanks, design of heat storage tanks, research on the integration of renewable energy sources in systems heating and reducing heat losses in heating networks, assessing the level of risk in heating networks. Scientific and research activities are closely related to the current challenges facing the Polish thermal energy industry: reducing emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere, replacing coal heat sources with renewable sources, optimizing the operating parameters of heat sources and pumping stations, including load distribution, forecasting heat demand. The area of expert activity of team members also includes the use of renewable energy sources to power heating systems and other facilities, as well as the integration of combined heat and electricity production systems in heating systems and their cooperation with the heating network. The team cooperates with national heating system operators associated with the Polish Chamber of Commerce and conducts international cooperation with the Danish Board of District Heating DBDH.
The Gas Systems Engineering Team is an important center of expertise in the country and abroad in the field of technical problems related to the transmission, distribution and use of gas. The most important issues of the Team’s activities are gas flow hydraulics, network simulation and optimization, and mathematical modeling of network elements, including improving the energy efficiency of gas stations and compressor stations. At the same time, the team conducts research in the field of technology for measuring the quantity and quality of the gas stream, state estimation, gas consumption forecast, dispatch systems (SCADA), detection and location of leaks in gas networks, assessment of the risk level in gas networks, analysis of reliability and operational safety and the role gas networks in the process of integrating energy systems (multi-energy systems, hydrogen economy). The team cooperates with national gas system operators associated in the Gas Industry Chamber and conducts international cooperation with the Department of Transport, Energy and Climate at the European Commission Joint Research Center in Petten.
